Epic Fail Promo Banner

This is a digital painting I did of the whole Epic Fail cast looking fearsome. I’m planning on getting it printed onto an X-Banner which I can take to conventions, speaking of which I have two in May: The Bristol Small Press Expo and the MCM Expo (London). See yout there?

D&D Fantasy Miniatures – in Origami!

Origami Goblin - Fantasy Gaming Miniature by Joseph WuDungeons and Dragons is a role-play game – a game of the imagination – so most of the action goes on inside your head; however, in a big, confusing battle visual repressentation can be useful. Among other things, it stops the characters from spontaneously teleporting from one side of the room to the other (without the use of a spell)! Aside from that it’s nice to see what you’re up against once in a while, to react in genuine horror as the GM reveals the hideous visage of the monster you have to fight (even if it is only 3cm high).

But miniatures are expensive, right? WRONG! You’ve got a piece of paper haven’t you? Well then – get folding and you can have your very own miniature army for mere cost of a bajillion papercuts!

Why I think Flattr is awesome for Webcomics

Flattr - Easy donations, tips and micropaymentsSo. Flattr. You are probably wondering “Flat-err-WHAT?!” having never heard of this thing. I only heard about it last week.  It was released in 2010 so it’s relatively new – less than a year old in fact, and still in beta. Nonetheless I am going to use my powers of prediction to foresee Flattr as a success – at least for webcomics!

I have a webcomic (Coo! You don’t say!) and with it terrific fans – in fact I’d go so far as to say the whole webcomics community is terrific. Fans and creators alike want to see the comics they love thrive and are incredibly supportive (and since you’re reading this I’ll take this opportunity to say, a little tearfully, Thanks Guys!) Yet, despite all this, only a small minority will send a donation. Don’t feel guilty – I have never donated myself. Sometimes I’ve hovered over the PayPal button, occassionally clicked, but gone through with it? Never.  Here’s why:

Drawing of Dirk – Paladin or Samurai?

Drawing of Dirk - Paladin or Samurai

A realistic-stlye drawing of Epic Fail’s Dirk posing with a sword. In the version of Dungeons & Dragons I play we use a deities system where Clerics and Paladins can choose to serve a specific God. Dirk serves Amaterasu, the Japanese Goddess of the sun, and I therefore consider him to really be a Samurai.

I used this picture as a vote incentive for Comic Hovel for a while, there’s a new one now.

Webcomic Review – Jake the Evil Hare

Jake the Evil Hare - A Superhero Webcomic "What happens when a very bad jackrabbit goes good?"

Jake the Evil Hare‘s tagline is: What happens when a very bad jackrabbit goes good? Jake is an Anthromorph, or ‘Furry’ if you prefer, which the comic explains in a ‘Secret of NIMH‘ / evil-scientific-experiment-gone-wrong kinda way. He’s also evil and a bit of a dick, fond of random violence and justifying murder to his own satisfaction, but he is the lesser of two evils and moreover trying to change.

This is a story of redemption althought that’s hard to see at first, largely because Jake keeps acting like a dick – an amusing dick but a dick nonetheless. Jake the Evil Hare is a complete lampoon of the Superhero genre and it’s anti-hero protagonist is probably as anti the Marvel-stlye Superhero as you are going to get.

Superman’s Epic Fail

Okay, I think it’s time for me to start blogging again about things I find funny or awesome. In this case it’s both!

Superman's Epic Fail

Even Heroes Have Bad Days‘ is a sculpture by Marcus Wittmers and took part in Berlin’s ‘Heroes, Freaks and Superrabbis‘ exhibition last year. The title says it all really. Well, when you’re flying at super speeds from planet to planet it’d only take a small miscalculation for things to go horribly, horribly wrong.

The funniest thing is there are fanboys out there arguing over this.  “Superman would knock the planet out of orbit, dude!” “Nah! He’d fly straight through it.” Heh heh, sorry guys, our evidence indicates he does a faceplant into a pavement somewhere. Heh heh.

The real intent of Berlin’s Superhero exhibition was to look at the social and historical context behind Golden Age Superheroes. Did you know that many of the most iconic superheroes, including Superman, Batman and Spiderman, were created by Jewish comic artists? Did you know that comics may have influenced America to join the fight against Nazism in World War II? Food for thought.

Old English Sheepdog Pencil Drawing

Old English Sheepdog Pencil Drawing by Amy Letts Pet Portraits

Old English Sheepdog - Detail view of pencil drawing by Amy Letts
Face Detail

Another doggy drawing!

This is the commission I got from one of the friends I play D&D with. I was for his girlfriend as a Valentines Day present because they both adore Old English Sheepdogs and want to have one as a pet one day. Aww! Apparently she loved it, and now I can post the picture of it here in my blog without any risk of ruining the surprise.

I used photo reference and drew with a very light pencil at first; I wanted to detail as much of the hair as possible, I mean, an Old English Sheepdog is pretty much ALL hair so it’s very important (such a big, hairy and beautiful breed)! Then I gradually added the darker tones and shading, using a smudge stick to gently blend.

It was rather fun, and I got to use a lot of different line types to create the textures in the background. YAY!

Labrador Puppy Pencil Drawing

Photo: Clownfish

I haven’t drawn anything photo-realistic in a while so I thought I’d see if I could still do it! What do you think?I’m quite happy with it. I love the puppy dog eyes, and I think the eyes are the most important bit to get right because they’re always the thing that grab me and give ‘life’ to a drawing.

I’m thinking of offering Pet Portraits because I love animals, they’re just so adorable how could one not enjoy drawing them? And I want, where possible, to live by my art which means thinking of ways to make money doing it. You’ll probably see a few more of my practises here as I prepare. Please, if any of my artist friends can lend me their experience to this project do comment.

Movie Review: The Gamers 2 – Dorkness Rising

A Sequel to The Gamers, Dorkness Rising is even better, like the first with all it’s rough edges smoothed off. From the first few seconds Dorkness Rising gleams with professionalism – it’s still an Indie production, for sure, but Dead Gentleman Productions have teamed up with Epic Level Entertainment to produce something to easily rival a cinematic release.

Still from The Gamers 2 - Dorkness Rising, Flyyn's 2nd death

Dorkness Rising uses the same style of storytelling established in the first, switching between in-game and out-of-game perspectives to great comic effect, but this time with a different group of gamers. The plot is entirely separate from it’s predecessor so there is no requirement to watch The Gamers first. A couple of characters recur: Lodge, played by Nathan Rice, is now the DM and originally played Newmoon. Mark (the Red) also makes a cameo appearance. (Hooray!)
