Webcomic War 2010

war20101

WAAAAAAAAAAAR!

Yes, Epic Fail is once again participating in the Webcomic WAR! And this time I intend to win! The theme this year is ‘Evil Genius.’ I have a great idea for a video: one of me sitting in on a high, shadowy chair slowly stroking a guinea pig…

At the moment there’s only one way you can help: posting to your blogs, twitter and/or forums about the AWESOME power of Epic Fail at www.comicofepicfail.com !

And then I shall take over the world and use you all as my slaves! Muahahahaha – *COUGH!* … Uh, could you forget about that last bit? I meant to say ‘fill the world with puppies and happiness.’ Honest.

Sunday Sketch #9

A page from my sketchbook.  I am practising drawing sword-fighting by copying freeze-frames from combat videos.  When we get some actual fighting in Epic Fail I want it to look right.  Don’t be suprised if you see some of these poses used in the comic.

Oh! And for those who want to pre-order Epic Fail #1 today is your last chance, after that they are closed.

Interview with Reiki Director Pedro Chaves

Director Pedro Chaves takes the hot seat and tells us all about his new movie Reiki!

Tell me about Reiki the Movie; what’s it about?

Reiki is a low budget action-fantasy feature film from Belgium. It tells the story of Vann and Hansel who awaken in a destroyed factory in the middle of nowhere with no memories of who they are… EXCEPT flashbacks from 400 years ago! During their exploration of the factory they meet Reisha, a girl who’s been running away from a group called “The Order”, witch-hunters that have been hunting witches since the dawn of time. Reisha tells Vann and Hansel that their flashbacks are true, they are memories of their past lives! Now Vann and Hansel must try to figure out who they are, why they awakened in this forgotten place, and survive their fight against the Order whilst protecting Reisha!

Sounds Exciting! Now, (if it’s not too much of a spoiler) why is the film called Reiki? Isn’t that a kind of massage?

Yeah, I heard that Reiki was a kind of Japanese massage; funnily enough when we started production nobody knew and it was just afterwards that some people told us. Actually there are some things alike between the movie Reiki and the Reiki massage (though very small).
Reiki is the name of the sword in the movie. The Reiki sword is a special sword that can cut the astral line of a human being, which means when a person is killed with the Reiki sword they won’t be able to reincarnate anymore,  thus they meet a true and absolute death.
The name of the sword has an hidden meaning, but if I told you it would be a huge spoiler!

Sunday Sketch #8: Fog Elemental

Now I’m sure you’re all too diplomatic to say so, but inking isn’t one of my strong points. There’s only one way to tackle that, though, isn’t there?  Practise!  So this is a fully inked drawing using several different types of line.  Yeah, I went for something insubstantial just to make it easy on myself!

Sunday Sketch #7: Suicidal Cupid?

Happy Valentines Day everyone!
Sadly I don’t have time to do a special comic for Valentines Day, but I hope you enjoy this. I don’t think he’s try to commit suicide, he just wonders what it would be like to fall in love and is willing to take the risk of getting hurt! Heck, aren’t we all?

Movie Review: Ben X

Ben X is an emotional and thought-provoking ride by first-time Belgium director Nic Balthazar. Watching the trailer you might be forgiven for thinking this is a movie about the dangers of online gaming. In fact MMORPGs are portrayed realistically and in a positive light. Logging on every day is the one uplifting thing in Ben’s otherwise bleak world. He is being bullied mercilessly by his peers because he is different – he suffers from Asperger Syndrome – and online escapism helps him to cope. It’s also a way for him to express his feelings and make friends in a way he can’t in the real world.

Windows 7 + Wacom Intuos = Epic Fail

Upgrading my operating system from XP to Windows 7 left me with a problem – my Wacom Intuos graphics tablet would not work properly. Specifically I could not switch from ‘pen mode’ to ‘mouse mode.’ A) I’m used to mouse mode B) I have a rather small tablet and two somewhat large monitors which led to the mouse pointer jumping about all over the place! I also found that the tablet was not recognised whenever any kind of Systems message popped up.

Googling, I discovered lots of people with similar (if not exactly the same) problems all related to Windows 7 and the Intuos series of Wacom tablets. I also found no working solution. Yet it had worked perfectly on XP…

And ultimately, after much fiddling, that turned out to be the solution – Uninstalling the Windows 7 appropriate drivers and installing those of an earlier system (Vista or XP). I used Driver 6.1.1-3(RC) for USB Tablets on Windows Vista & XP (32 & 64 bit). And it works perfectly!

So if you have problems with your wacom tablet on Windows 7 go and find some older drivers for it – do not use ones that say they are for Windows 7! It’s possible you may have problems installing them. If you do right-click on the driver installer and select ‘Run as Administrator’ and they should go through okay. Hopefully this’ll help some frustrated artists out there with tablet troubles.

Sunday Sketch #6: A Pig in the Hand…

Okay, so it’s not a Sunday, but my computer was crashing like crazy yesterday! Anyway here you go – a tiny little baby pig sitting in someone’s hand – how sweet! And yes, baby guinea pigs really are this small! I think I’ve copied all the picture of my calander that I want too, the others aren’t quite as nice. Or maybe I’ve had my fill of piggys for a while? We’ll see…

Movie Review: Coraline

Coraline is a Children’s horror film and, unsurprisingly, has been quite controversial within parental forums with some arguing it is too scary for it’s PG rating. The Nightmare Before Christmas – also directed by Henry Selick – provoked a similar reaction yet is a firm family favourite with a strong cult following. It’s very different from a regular children’s film, which may account for its success. Likewise Coraline is a refreshing break from the same-old same-old and pushes the envelope on children’s entertainment. It’s frightening in a surreal, psychological way evocative of nightmares with a sprinkling of creepiness. But by embodying these intangible childhood fears it also tackles how to deal with them, and is ultimately empowering and uplifting.

Coraline is a stop-motion animation and the hand-crafted feel is particularly appropriate to its theme. With the introduction of computer-generated animation stop-motion, which is a painstakingly slow process, is becoming increasingly rare. Coraline’s visuals are breathtaking with minute attention to detail in every frame. It’s a work of art with beautiful, atmospheric scenery and luscious, touchable textures. I could forgive a multitude of sins for something this pretty.

Coraline could live in a perfect world if she'd just let her Other Mother sew buttons in her eyes
