Movie Review: AVATAR
I have seen Avatar twice at the cinema, both times in 3D. The first time I found the 3D distracting, probably because I am not used to it. True, the three-dimensional effect is not ‘in-your-face;’ it is used to enhance the movie and create greater immersion, a feeling of ‘being there;’ however there are a few scenes with soldiers milling about and I had to keep checking that this was part of the film and not people walking around the cinema itself! Yes, the 3D is that good! It makes you believe you can reach out and touch things (the illusion only ruined when you try)!
The CGI is groundbreaking in itself; the alien race, the Na’vi, are so convincing, so realistic, the only way to tell them apart from real people is… they’re blue. Likewise the terrain, plants and animals that make up the planet of Pandora are breathtakingly realistic. You could not do better if you dropped a man off on an alien world with a video-camera.

Webcomic Spotlight: LINT
LINT follows the journey of Sangwine Schloeffle, an exiled elven prince, whose family has been murdered and kingdom usurped by the evil Fang, Overlord of Darkness!
LINT is, and will probably always be, one of my all time favourite comics. I started reading it when it was still in pencil and the fact that it started out from fairly basic artwork and developed into something much more beautiful is a great inspiration. For me it is part of the comics charm and those early drawings should never be replaced.
The plot, too, advanced from a light-hearted adventurers jaunt into a complex, well thought out, emotional experience. Later on the tone becomes more serious, but it still has a sort of tongue-in-cheek irreverence to it. It has made me laugh and it has made me cry. The juxtaposition of humour and drama works to heighten them both. That’s a style I admire and would like to do something similar in my own work.
I’m writing this now because, after five years, the story of LINT is complete. It’s sad, because I will miss reading it, but also wonderful. There is satisfaction in completion. Heaven knows I have experienced the frustration of webcomics that have ended half way through a story! And hopefully the author, Colby Purcell, will go on to create other things.

Wish Epic Fail a Happy Birthday

Cameo Catch-Up
Last year I missed a couple of Cameos so I thought I’d take this opportunity to play catch-up and show that I appreciate them.
First up Tinuvielle appeared in LOVEFEAST, hanging out in the Institute for Training in the Arts of Death and cheering on ‘delicious conflict.’ Well well, isn’t she a dark horse?
LOVEFEAST is a webcomic by Senshuu about former mortals training to become Shinigami: Gods of Death! The characters are learning to cope with their extraordinary new powers and responsibilities whilst struggling to retain their humanity. They are just starting their journey and it’s sure to be an interesting ride! LOVEFEAST is an adult comic and has adult themes delivered with a smidgen of dry humour. Interesting and worth checking out.
Next we have Amuletts turning up in Dungeon Legacy tucked behind Minos the Minotaur there. She’s checking out a trial (probably hoping to see the law perverted) along with characters from several other webcomics credited here.
Dungeon Legacy by George Ward (aka Dungeon Warden) is, like Epic Fail, is based on Dungeons and Dragons and has been running for, oh, simply ages. It’s a comic I enjoy and have read almost all of it. Dungeon Legacy actually gets on with the story instead of telling stupid jokes! There’s a lesson in there somewhere…
Thanks to everyone in the wonderful webcomics community who have supported Epic Fail and done such great Fan Art and Cameos. It really made my first year a good one. That’s right – Epic Fail is one year old tomorrow! Granted I haven’t updated every week of that year… but I started on January 9th and it’s almost January 9th again. Hurrah!

Snow Fairies!
Guess what my new favorate toys are? That’s right they’re Flitter Fairies! I was lucky enough to recieve two, Daria and Alexa, as Christmas Pressents and wanted to see if I could fly them both. Doing that whilst simultaneously opperating a video camera was challenging to say the least especially combined with the wind and the snow. But they look so pretty!
