Interview with Director Cisco Davis Jr. on ‘The Peculiars.’

Director and Producer Cisco Davis Jr. talks about The Peculiars – an Indie Superhero film set to start filming this autumn. Something peculiar is coming…

First things first, What is The Peculiars about?

The Peculiars is a actually a spin-off of my webcomic “The Pure and Hidden Truth” (www.pureandhiddentruth.com). It tells the story of a team of crime fighters based in Baltimore City that have just gone public as they take on their first big challenge of facing off with a domestic terror cell of dangerously imaginative mimes.

I’ve long suspected Mimes to be evil! Interesting villains to say the least; Mimes can do amazing things with their bodies. Have you cast actual Mimes and what feats can we expect to see from them?

During the casting process when I was casting the lead villain and and “henchmimes” I was very disappointed that I was auditioning ordinary people for these roles. And then I lucked out one day when I got an e-mail from an actual professional mime from New York! A week later the person came down to Baltimore for dinner and to talk about the movie and was cast on the spot for the lead villain! What’s cool is that the actor is a professional mime and can coach other villain actors during filming. I don’t want to give away too much of what these mimes are capable of but let’s just say that the phrase “dangerously imaginative” alludes to the very real possibility that their “miming”
of various actions or wielding certain objects could pose a serious threat to our heroes… 😉

Movie Review: Dungeons & Dragons (2000)

I’m starting to believe that Dungeons & Dragons is to film what Macbeth is to Theatre: cursed. Invoke the name and you spell disaster. Perhaps you’ve seen the 80’s cartoon series or Dragons of Autumn Twilight? They were bad, to be sure, but this is worse – far worse than you can possibly imagine. Which, believe it or not, is sort of it’s charm; it keeps you watching with morbid fascination to see just how bad bad can get.

Blue lipstick? Bugger me!

The movie’s tag-line was ‘This is no game,’ and truer words were never spoken. The classic role-play game is only conspicuous in it’s absence from the production that bears it’s name. A few scant elements were incorporated from the source matter, but those inaccurately, so what was intended as fan service comes across as a kick in the teeth.

Birthday Guest Art 4

A belated but warmly received Birthday present from purenightshade of Children of the Tiger, a good friend of mine. In this picture Amuletts is looking at Kinrou’s right glove which is adorned by a Sacred Gem – a large ruby the size of a ducks egg.  Yeah… I doubt she’s going to give that back and if she does she’ll only steal it again later, the earrings too I shouldn’t wonder.

Birthday Guest Art 3

This third piece of gift art was given to me by Arne Schulenberg aka Ancire of Union of Heroes and it made me laugh out loud! For those of you who don’t know Union of Heroes is an Alternate Reality German photo-comic. As you can see it has some kick-ass costumes. Man that’s a nice shield!

The sword’s in transit I take it? Yeah, yeah, I know – I get it in comic world not in the real world! Ah well, I do have thirteen already, that should be enough right?

Birthday Guest Art 2

Yesterday was my Birthday and this is a present I was given by George Ward aka DungeonWarden of Dungon Legacy. His comic, like mine, is based on D&D but has been running for a lot longer. In this picture Karlaia and Arlina are handing Amuletts a gift. I wonder what’s inside? Hmm, that box is too big for a Deck of Many Things, perhaps it’s a Bag of Holding. Amuletts is very fond of her extra-dimensional spaces. Then again it could be full of gems!! Well, whatever it is, lets hope Amuletts does not floccinaucinihilipilificate* it.

TGT Webcomics also wished me a Happy Birthday on their podcast, so you should check that out too.

*This is one of the longest words in the English language and since discovering it I’ve wanted an excuse to use it. It means “The act or habit of describing or regarding something as worthless.”

Birthday Guest Art

Today is my Birthday and I have been given a present in the form of this gorgeous gift art by Luke Healy of Pint Size Pixel and Swanny Nook. That’s simply the best kind of present.

Luke Healy is a British artist and we both attended the UK Web & Mini Comix Thing earlier this year although *sniff* it’s looking as if that convention may be no more… I was surprised on reading his comic to discover that I seem to be in it!!! A klutzy (dyed) redhead who’s actually called Amy! I’m flattered I guess…

Swanny Nook is actually the name of a magic shop in the comic. I hope my alter-ego gets some contact juggling balls. I’ve always wanted some of those.

Dialogue Free Comics Day

Today, May 14th, is ‘Dialogue Free Comics Day.’  It’s a challenge to create a silent comic, a mute comic, a comic where actions speak rather than words.  Talking heads can take a hike.  Show – Don’t tell!  Text, in the form of signs or sound effects are allowed however.

Conceived by Noel Curry of D. J. Bogtrotter to reaffirm comics as a primarily visual artform forty other webcomics decided to participate.

I think it’s a great idea! It’s easy to fall into the trap of explaining the story through dialogue rather than trusting the images.  The pictures in a comic need to be important otherwise they’re superfluous.  Creating a silent page is a great exercise.  They say a picture paints a thousand words which makes them capable of greater impact.  Some jokes are purely visual – they’re simply not funny in the telling.  And of course silence breaks all language barriers.

Saying nothing…sometimes says the most.” – Emily Dickinson

Movie Review: Kick-Ass

Kick-Ass is an irreverent pulp-style movie you’ll either get extremely offended by or like… a lot. It’s in-your-face, non-pc, and ultra-violent. So basically, if that’s not your bag, stay well clear. The film was independently produced by Matthew Vaughn alongside Mark Millar’s creator-owned comic book, so there is bags of creator input and cross-over with zero interference or censorship.

Unfortunately in some countries Kick-Ass was rated PG-13 and promoted in trailers as a light-hearted teen flick. This is outrageously misleading and I don’t know who in their right minds would classify it as anything less than an 18. We’re talking graphic violence and something like 250 hardcore profanities. It’s adult content; kids should not see it. Period.
