It’s September the 13th (and coincidentally a Friday) which means it’s Blame Someone Else Day! So I’m blaming Tamora Pierce of all this fantasy nonsense I’ve been putting out. Here’s my picture of Alanna of Trebond and you should check out other peoples influences/scapegoats at United Webcomics.

Tamora Pierce is a fantasy author who has been a big influence on me, particularly her ‘Song of the Lioness’ quartet. Her books literally saved my life and inspired me to create my own stories.
Alanna of Trebond is a red-headed heroine who disguises herself as a boy so that she can become a Knight, rather than being schooled as a Lady as is expected of her.
Alanna is true to herself and overcomes gender discrimination.
My character Amuletts was originally based on another character in the series: the lovable rogue George. (She’s changed a bit since meeting Loki).

Happy Valentines Day everyone! Yet again Epic Fail is participating in the Valentines Day Sex Drive – an excuse for gratuitous nudity (and I’ll take any excuse)! This year Martin has traded his clothing for a bag of magic beans! Oh and Tinuvielle’s there too, to point and laugh, but she ought to watch out because it’s her turn next year!

25 essential expressions challenge - tinuvielle

My 2nd attempt at the 25 Essential Expressions Challenge this time with Tinuvielle. I did Amuletts before and I think I will do Clodin next. It is a good exercise and I think you all know how much I enjoy drawing expressions and putting personality into them. They really make the characters come to life in my opinion. I think this one turned out a lot better than the previous Expressions Challenge. I guess I’m improving.

As always your constructive criticism would be much appreciated.

This week in Epic Fail: Tinuvielle and Jake (the Evil Hare) plan to test whether guns blow Dragons away, but they have a back-up plan if it doesn’t work.

Creator’s Commentary: Poor Clodin! Sam Medina of Jake The Evil Hare seems to have it in for him!

Besides Jake the Evil Hare Sam Medina also makes a fantasy webcomic called Darkfell which is really good, and you should check it out. On a related note he has recently launched a Novel called Katrina the Dragon Slayer which I am reading at the moment and enjoying immensely.

Sam has drawn Epic Fail a Guest Strip before and here’s a link to it if you haven’t seen it.

Amuletts mounted on her Gryphon flying over Kasper’s Castle. I have tons of fun drawing this Gryphon so it was naturally one of the things I wanted to put into the WAGON webcomic battle deck. I could have done anything for the background but I decided I’d make it actually relevant! Looks cool anyhow, like they are flying really high.

The Gryphon does not have a name by the way so if anyone would like to suggest a name for it feel free. (Male or female or anything in between is fine since it’s not a *real* Gryphon, it’s a magical construct, so it probably doesn’t have a physical gender).

Card Art of Martin for the WAGON Webcomic Battle collectable cardgame. Admittedly I might have gone a bit overboard on this one… fun though!

Martin is very charismatic and attracts attention wherever he goes, he also attracts trouble like flies to shit (which may explain why Amuletts hangs around with him). Nobody is quite sure why but there is no denying it!

Basically Martin reflects the luck of his player. I don’t know whether any other gaming groups have a player that the dice always seem to pick on? We do and it’s Martin. If there’s a random roll to see who a monster will attack: it’s Martin. If there’s there’s a random encounter during the night who’ll be on watch? Martin. If there’s a beautiful maiden -or ugly bugbear- who’ll win it’s heart? Fill in the blank: _ _ _ _ _ _ (Clue – it begins with ‘M’).

Sunday Sketch #18 – Fugly

This is Fugly. I don’t think he was every officially christened, but everybody called him that so he assumed it was his name!

I’ve played Fugly in a few D&D games and he came number 3 in my ‘Favorite 5 Player Characters list.’ He is a classic example of Low Comliness i.e. he is physically unattractive – not to be confused with a low charisma character like Crunt. Fugly actually has a sweet nature that endeers him to people if only they will look past his appearance and get to know him (unfortunately few do).

He is a half-orc and his ugliness is a result of birth deformities which meant he was picked on by both Orcs and Humans and beaten regularly as a result. This left him with scars, a broken nose, cheekbone etc. that made him look even uglier. Unfortunately people can be cruel and judge by appearance. He also has low intellegence but I think that comes from being beaten round the head a little too often. Sad, eh?

Yeah I’m kinda mean to my characters…

This is Crunt (derived from Crotchety Runt and only coincidentally sounds like a rude word).
He’s like Grumpy (from the Seven Dwarves) but without the charm. This is the dwarf that other dwarves find too offensive to be around. Crunt is not evil (Lawful Good actually), he’s just unpleasant, rude and smelly (he’s afraid of water). It often annoys me in computer RPGs how you are not allowed to role-play a rude character without it being considered evil. Someone can be ill-mannered yet still carry a good heart.

Crunt is the epitome of low Charisma. Now many, many people get low charisma confused with low Comliness – but comliness is how physically attractive/unattractive you are whereas Charisma is about how attractive your personality is. Look out for an example of low Comliness next week when I’ll be doing the concept art for Crunt’s sidekick Fugly.
