Movie Review: The Gamers 2 – Dorkness Rising

A Sequel to The Gamers, Dorkness Rising is even better, like the first with all it’s rough edges smoothed off. From the first few seconds Dorkness Rising gleams with professionalism – it’s still an Indie production, for sure, but Dead Gentleman Productions have teamed up with Epic Level Entertainment to produce something to easily rival a cinematic release.

Dorkness Rising uses the same style of storytelling established in the first, switching between in-game and out-of-game perspectives to great comic effect, but this time with a different group of gamers. The plot is entirely separate from it’s predecessor so there is no requirement to watch The Gamers first. A couple of characters recur: Lodge, played by Nathan Rice, is now the DM and originally played Newmoon. Mark (the Red) also makes a cameo appearance. (Hooray!)

Pg 50: Overlooked

This week in Epic Fail: The party go to see Simone, a Magic-User with a job for them. Clodin says that as the leader he should do the talking, but as soon as the door is open she goes straight to Martin much to his chagrin.

Creator’s Commentary: I started and re-started this page 3 times, I was mostly done with the second version when I decided to bin it. I’m glad I did because the third and final version tuned out so much better. It can be such a temptation just to draw characters from straight in front or straight sideways, because it’s easy and there’s not a lot that can go wrong like with tricky angles and foreshortening. Except it’s flat and boring. That’s what I couldn’t accept; I guess I’m demanding more of myself.

I ran into some difficulty with height, specifically Clodin and Yoru. I still have a bee in my bonnet about a workshop I attended a while back, during which I asked for advice for drawing midgets, i.e. people who are proportionally smaller, as per the dictionary definition. I got jumped on for ‘using an offensive term and being discriminatory’ and therefore never received the help I still sorely need for drawing smaller characters such as (fantasy) Dwarves, Halflings and children. Harrumph! I guess it was just a misunderstanding but wish it hadn’t gotten in the way. If anyone can give me advice on drawing, to use the longer, less controversial definition, proportionally smaller characters it would be greatfully received!

My first review and other news

Epic Fail has had a really lovely, positive review at The Soulless Machine, a review blog covering short stories and other stuff. It’s a good place for discovering new literature that’s somewhat outside the mainstream, and is very supportive of small press and self-publishers. You can read their review of Epic Fail here.  I hardly need add that I’m chuffed as ninepence.

In other news, I’ve registered the domain name www.comicofepicfail.com which I think is more memorable and easier to pass on to people verbally. I tried to get epicfail.com by preorder but, alas, did not succeed. I fear it is just too popular a term for me to stand a chance.

I’m still looking for webcomic cameos to appear in a crowd scene on page 11. I’m mainly looking for human characters since these are the dominant race in my world, but I will accept a few from other races. The sooner you let me know that you would like your characters included the more likely it is they will be. I will also be making a bigger version of the scene as a free wallpaper.

Just to remind you I still need support in the webcomic WAR! I’ve already promised to post a picture of myself in my underwear if I win, but there is likely to be some other kind of extra content to reward my loyal fans in the event of a victory! So please do a little something, and thankyou all.

How I colour my comic on video… almost!

Some people have asked me how I make my webcomic.  So when I did the Valentines Day bonus page I used a free screen capturing programme called CamStudio to make a video so I could show you.  It wasn’t a 1oo% sucess, so unfortunately you cannot see the whole process from beginning to end.  It should give you a pretty good idea however.

What you see is me scanning in the hand-drawn page of the comic into photoshop.  It’s not perfect so I make the lines sharper by increasing the brightness and contrast by 30, then I clean up any mistakes or fuzzy edges.  Once that’s done I select the black lines and use them to create two new layers, one called ‘linework’ the other ‘colorfill.’  Then I bucketfill the colorfill layer, saving various selections as I go to make things easier when I get to the shading.  Once this is completed I reload the selections one at a time and add shading using various brushes and the dodge and burn tools. That’s pretty much how I make Epic fail!

Anyway, I hope you find the video useful/interesting.  Hopefully I will have better luck next time I make one.
