The 30 Characters Challenge

This is cool and if I’d heard about it earlier I would have totally signed up!
30 characters challenge
‘The 30 Characters Challenge’ is to create 30 new characters in 30 days, one for every day in November*. Because there can never be too many characters, right? Who’s with me?

This is a great website to visit for inspiration not to mention great art. With over 150 participants, including several webcomic artists, all you’ve gotta do is sit there and refresh the page ever 10 minutes or so and you’re going to find something new.

We’re talking characters in every style and genre, stretching the imagination and getting the creative juices flowing. Those artistic muscles don’t exercise themselves! Character design can be tricky and there’s nothing like learning by example.

Registration is closed, but late-comers are encouraged to participate on their personal websites. Personally I’ll be waiting til next year (I should be using my free time to draw comics anyway), but that doesn’t mean I haven’t bookmarked 30characters.com and won’t be enjoying what its artists have to offer – I certainly shall.

*Yes, the same month as NaNoWriMo, just to be awkward.

Halloween Skull Facepaint

HAPPY HALLOWEEN!
Skull / Undead Facepaint by Amy Letts

I’m pretty crazy about facepaint, I wish I had more time/excuses to do it. I had these pictures hanging around from a while ago and I figured they’re scary, it’s Halloween, why not post ’em?

This is a facepaint of a skull, although probably not anatomically correct. I was going more for ‘that’s just freaking scary’ because I’ve seen lots of face-painted skulls and never found then particularly frightening and frequently, well… FUNNY. This is a complete undead monstrosity!

The model is me; I did it using a mirror. The main base color is brown because it make it look like a really old skull and also allows for more interesting shading. I also added a few fine cracks to make it look really ancient. Yep, I scared some people with this.

Trick or treat?

Movie Review: Dungeons & Dragons 2 – Wrath of the Dragon God

After the atrocity of Dungeons & Dragons the Movie it’s doubtful whether any sequel ever had lower expectations than this. Fortunately things could only get better. Wrath of the Dragon God could not be more different from its predecessor, and it’s gratifying to see criticism being used constructively.

Mages casting spells

Set in Ismer a century on the city is unrecognisable, but Damodar, the blue-lipped henchman (minus the blue lips) and only recurring character (played by Bruce Payne), plans to destroy it. It seems Jeremy Irons cursed him with undeath (justification for blue lips if ever I heard one) so Damodar, seeking revenge, locks him in a room with the first movie playing on a continual loop recovers the magical Orb of Thingamabob to awaken the sleeping Dragon God.

Movie Review: InAlienable

Dr. Eric Norris (Richard Hatch) is infected by an alien parasite producing a tentacled offspring which shares his DNA and embarks on a legal battle for custody over the ‘child’. An interesting and original concept full of promise but which fails to fulfil its potential.

inalienable

There’s a rumour that Director Robert Dyke kidnapped the Stars from a local Sci-Fi convention and held them at gunpoint until the filming was complete. Okay, so I made that up, but this movie is jam-packed with actors from Star Trek, Babylon 5, Stargate and Battlestar Galactica to name but a few. And, honestly, playing a game of star-spotting is probably to only way you’ll make it to the end.

Cosmic Hellcats Interview – Part 2

The Cosmic Hellcats Interview continues with Chris Maverick, and its Artist Maximillian joins us.

Click here if you haven’t read Cosmic Hellcats Interview – Part 1.

Epic Fail webcomic Interview with Cosmic Hellcats

Hmm, you’d need to find some very dedicated cos-players… which leads me to ask: If you were a character in a Sci-Fi show who would you be and why?

Mav: That’s a hard one. And one that I don’t really have a good answer for. The thing is, I’d change my mind every three seconds. I’ve thought of 10 shows that I’d love to be on for one reason or another since I started answering the question. I guess the great thing about being a writer is not having to decide. I like that the universe can literally be anything I want it to be. I like different kinds of stories depending on my mood. So while I would love to be piloting the Millennium Falcon one moment, two seconds from now I’ll want to be Batman.

Max: Batman is tempting. I’d sure like my superpower to be “ridiculous wealth.”But I don’t see how anyone can be asked that question and not answer Jayne Cobb.

Cosmic Hellcats Interview – Part 1

Writer Chris Maverick (Mav) takes the hot seat to talk about his Science Fiction webcomic  Cosmic Hellcats.

Epic Fail webcomic Interview with Cosmic Hellcats

Mav explains what Cosmic Hellcat Adventures is all about:

Cosmic Hellcats follows the exploits of a scrappy crew of catgirl Science Ninjas as they explore the universe while battling aliens, robots, gigantic four-dimensional children, pirates, monsters, the laws of physics, and their own pathologically destructive tendencies.

The main team consists of: tough as nails leader, Captain Amaya Solace; brilliant but nymphomaniac science officer Dr. Sarah Prankha; adventure loving pilot Lt. Damsel Reed and the homicidal weapons officer with a lolcat speech impediment, Chaste. They’re joined by Andrew, a silent battledroid with an inferiority complex and Fluffy, their sarcastic ship computer as they travel the universe causing as much trouble as they get out of.

Epic Fail webcomic Interview with Cosmic HellcatsOther characters that make appearances include the members of competing units from amongst their allies in the Federated Union of Confederated Kingdoms. The Tactics Espionage and Defense Directorate: Intergalactic Justice Advocates: µ (Four space faring teddy bears: Kennedy, Rooselvelt, Pendergrass and Riley); a fellow Hellcat Unit led by Captain Nikki “Shipwrecks” Kitai and consisting of team members: Bambii, Glover and Ensign Matt; and most recently the Starfoxes, a superpowered special forces team led by Sahara and including members Miaa, Shiima and Trix.

Their primary enemies are the Rigellians, a race of one-eyed reptile people with bunny ears who are amassing a vast empire throughout the universe despite their comical ineptitude. They’ve also encountered Jessi and Junior, a pair of four-dimensional space giants who eat planets and a band of pirates led by the maniacal Captain Arkady and his first mate, Lucy.

Whilst formatted as a joke strip, the stories are serialized with one episode leading into the next, taking one year to tell a complete tale. In addition there’s a weekend strip called Hellcat Cosmos that while not part of the main story is used to tell anecdotal one-panel stories about characters in the Hellcats Universe – frequently characters that haven’t appeared in the main comic as often as we’d like!
