2012 News

Okay there’s a number of subjects covered in this post so I’ve used subheading.

COMIC CREATORS FOR FREEDOM

Good news everyone! The Comic Creator’s for Freedom Wallpaper raised a staggering $7,500 for charity. If you participated in the fundraiser give yourself a well deserved pat on the back for striking a blow against human trafficking. Did you spot Amuletts amongst the snowball throwers yet?

Comic Creators For Freedom

By the way posters of this years wallpaper as well as those from previous years is available here with 100% of the proceeds going to charity.

SOPA/PIPA BLACKOUT

Some of you might have noticed that Epic Fail blacked out last month on January 18th along with over 200,000 other sites including Wikipedia as part of the ‘Stop SOPA and PIPA’ protest. Sorry for the inconvenience but it was to demonstrate the devastating effect these bills could have on the internet if they were passed. Well it had a big effect with senators dropping their support for the bill like a hot potato!

stop SOPA PIPA

In case you didn’t know the big thing about the ‘Stop Online Piracy Act’ and the ‘Protect Intellectual Property Act’ was that websites would only need to be SUSPECTED of supporting piracy or infringing copyright to be SHUT DOWN. Which totally goes against the principal of innocent until proven guilty! And the definition of ‘supporting Piracy’ was very broad, such as TALKING about it. It would have given the American Government the power to just take down sites it didn’t like, implementing political censorship and denying our freedom of speech. Thank GOD the protest was effective because there was a great deal of support for the bills beforehand. We must continue to be vigilant and fight to protect our freedoms.

VALENTINES DAY SEX DRIVE

Now Valentines Day will be here soon and I along with several other webcomic artists will be participating in the ‘Valentines Day Sex Drive!’ Started by Stef of Sarah Zero in 2005 all the VDSD involves is drawing a nude picture of one of your original characters and posting it on Valentines Day. So I’ll be doing that and linking to the others so that all you perves can look (don’t worry, it’ll be behind a cut to protect innocent eyes).

NO CONS – ONLINE MERCH

In other news I’m kinda skipping the Small Press Conventions this year – my plan is to concentrate on my online audience which is, after all, a lot bigger than the handful of readers I get to meet IRL. And you’ve been missing out on the merch! So I’m going to set up an online store and start offering it to you along with some new stuff, then if I do rejoin the convention scene it’ll be with altogether much cooler stuff. Is there anything you’d like to see?

EPIC FAIL IN THE WAGON WEBCOMIC BATTLE

OnyxSparrow has invited Epic Fail to be part of the next Wagon Webcomic Battle deck of collectible playing cards – and I have accepted with great enthusiasm. WAGON is a battling card game where the players do battle against each other using the characters and plot devices from webcomics! I love gaming! We’re planning some completely epic cards so I’m really excited about it.

EXTRA BLOG STUFF

I’ve also started doing a few more Webcomic Interviews and am planning to make it a regular thing. So if you have a cool webcomic and would like to be interviewed by email let me know.

Another thing I’m thinking of doing for the blog is a ‘Fail of the Week’ where I choose my favourite picture that’s turned up under the Epic Fail meme that week. ‘Cos I did promise extra fail didn’t I?

ADVERTISING

I decided to try out Project Wonderful because my Palace in the Sky Ad Box (a webcomic traffic exchange thingy) broke. So if you want to advertise on Epic Fail – do it! It actually seems to be working pretty well so far and I’ve decluttered the sidebar a bit so if anything it should be slightly less intrusive.  But let me know if any of the ads are really irritating and I’ll give them the boot.

That’s all for now folks! Thank you for reading and supporting Epic Fail.

Pg 60: Care Less

This week in Epic Fail: Martin offends Tinuvielle by suggesting she miss the adventure in order to look after Yoru. She just thinks he’s being a chauvinist.

Creator’s Commentary: The punchline on this page made me giggle lots. Have you ever experienced something like that where you’re having private thoughts and somebody suddenly says them out loud? Only most of the time they actually said something completely different, you only thought they said what you were thinking. Or did they?

I revised the dialogue on this page sooo many times. It was tricky because in, um, ‘reality’ (RPG-land) it was Amuletts that tried to persuade Tinuvielle to stay at home with the kid, and she wasn’t nearly as delicate. I know I’ve probably just annoyed all the Amuletts fans but she was stealing the limelight. STEALING it. Seriously though I don’t think the scene could have revealed much of Amuletts’ character the way it does for Martin. It serves the story better this way getting a few undercurrents out into the open.

Pg 59: Not going back

This week in Epic Fail: Martin asks if half-demon Yoru is returning to the Guan-Yin Temple. Tinuvielle insists he is coming with the party for their upcoming adventure despite the potential risks.
Creator’s Commentary: Sorry about the wall of text in this one, but it’s pretty concise compared to what it could have been. I actually drew this page with only a vague idea of what the dialogue was going to be; I was a little worried it wouldn’t fit or gel.

I hate Tinuvielle’s face in the last panel. Hate it. I will probably have to redraw it later.

Pg 57: Amuletts Laments

This Week in Epic Fail: Everyone is delighted they got given so much money but Amuletts is lamenting that it wasn’t more.

Creator’s Commentary: Big surprise there! Yeah… I don’t think you learn anything new about the characters from this page that you didn’t already know :p  I suppose you may not have realised quite how much pride Amuletts takes in her greed. It really means a lot to her that she’s better at it than anyone else. She’s worked hard at those character flaws dammit!

I had a go at a few different expressions here. Amuletts is meant to have a thousand mile stare in frame one but I’m not sure it worked out; I’m tempted to edit it so her ears are drooping a bit there as well. My intent was that she be sticking her lower lip out in panel three. Dirk is supposed to be rolling his eyes in the fouth panel and sneering in the fifth. As always critique welcome; I’m trying to push my skill further where I can.

I’m moving house at the weekend. Wish me luck!

My Little Pony – Failure is Epic!

My Little Pony, Epic Fail in the style of Friendship is Magic, FiM
At the beginning of My Little Pony ‘Friendship is Magic‘ you always see a picture of all the characters which Twilight Sparkles has presumably sent to Princess Celestia. So I decided to make my own in the same style using the characters from Epic Fail.

I’ve posted all the characters individually so you can go back and look at them in more detail if you haven’t already and see what their Cutie Marks are.

Yoru Plushie

Click on the tumbnails for full-sized image.

I made a Plushie of Epic Fail’s character Yoru! I made it using the ‘sit pattern  tutorial‘ by BabyLondonStar on Deviantart. It’s made mostly out of Felt with a short-shag fur fabric for the hair. I had trouble finding a light-grey fur for the fringe so I had to sacrifice a stuffed shark for it. Overall Plushie Yoru uses 12 types of fabric and 4 types of tread. The clothes are all made as separate pieces. The horns are just little felt cones.

It took a while, probably because I have never made anything like this before and he’s entirely hand-stitched, but I am really proud. He’s devilishly cute! I kinda want to make all the characters now!

SPECIAL: Thor’s Hammer

Another special comic based on Thor. I just kept thinking up funnies so here you go! I’ve uploaded a bigger version to Deviantart which you can look at if you like.

I’m getting ready for the convention season and want to create a mini comic. Well… a pamphlet actually, but you’ll see what I mean. So I’ll be taking an officail break from the main comic but probably be posting a lot of other stuff. I’ll fill you in on the details with a proper blog post soon.

The first con I’ll be going to is the Bristol Small Press Expo on May 14th-15th.

THOR Special

This week in Epic Fail: Martin laughs at Amuletts for cheering for Loki instead of Thor.

Creator’s Commentary: This is a special comic in case you didn’t know – I tried to make it clear – so it doesn’t follow on from the regular storyline. It’s inspired by the upcoming THOR movie. Epic Fail is influenced by norse mythos, or at least Loki!

Go here to read another THOR comic page I drew for a competition. Please vote if you can. If you do I could win!! You need to be a registered member of Comicracy to vote, but the sign-up process is really quick and easy. Remember to say your referrer was Amuletts or Epic Fail. And thankyou my lovely readers.

Thankyou very much for voting for Epic Fail in the Comicracy Thor Contest, thanks to you Epic Fail drew with I’m Famous in first place and got a fantastic prize!

I’ll post more very soon!

Pg 55: Funny Joke!

This week in Epic Fail: Simone offers a substantial reward if the adventurers will accept the quest, but Dirk wants no reward, only to do good.

Creator’s Commentary: So it turns out Dirk has a great sense of humor and is really the joker in the pack!

I enjoyed doing the ‘friendly arm punch/shut-the-hell-up punch.’ I like my characters to be physical. I blame William Shatner and his touchy-feely acting in Star Trek.

And if you too would like to speak Pig Latin there is an English to Pig Latin Translator!

Epic Fail Promo Banner

This is a digital painting I did of the whole Epic Fail cast looking fearsome. I’m planning on getting it printed onto an X-Banner which I can take to conventions, speaking of which I have two in May: The Bristol Small Press Expo and the MCM Expo (London). See yout there?
